Solutions for Oily Skin
Oily skin is a result of over productive sebaceous glands that are inherent in a person’s genetic makeup. This type of skin is more resistant to wrinkles and discoloration but it is more prone to frequent breakouts and large pores.
Oily skin is primarily associated with teenage years or at the onset of puberty, however, it can persist throughout a person’s lifetime. It is triggered by hormonal changes. In women, fluctuations in hormones occur even after puberty; it can happen around the time of menstruation, pregnancy, or menopausal stage.
The good thing is that oily skin is very manageable. It does, however, require discipline to follow a specific skin care regimen.
Solutions to prevent oily skin:
- Proper cleansing. Use a good cleanser designed for oily skin – products that contain glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Experts say that washing your face twice a day is enough. Too much washing will cause the skin to produce more oil.
- Avoid harsh cleansers that may irritate the skin, such as soaps, because they strip away the skin’s natural oils.
- Apply toner after cleansing. A toner removes leftover dirt and helps tighten pores.
- Use clay or mud masks. Beauty experts say that these help strip away excess oil.
- Use a light moisturizer. The skin still needs to retain moisture. An oil-free moisturizer will do the trick. Experts recommend noncomedogenic moisturizers as these won’t clog up the pores.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) creams. AHA improves collagen production, hydrates the skin and improves its texture.
- Retinoids. Doctors can prescribe retinoids to reduce oil production.
- Wear sunscreen. Although more resistant to wrinkles, oily skin will still age and discolor.
- Light makeup. Apply powder over base and keep makeup light. There are also makeup products that contain oil control properties.
- Blotting papers. Carry a pack of blotting papers to wipe away oil during a busy day.
